According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 24 million children in America - one out of three - live in biological father-absent homes. It only seems fitting - this Father's Day - that we shine a light on dads and the impact they have in curbing society's worst social problems.
The National Fatherhood Initiative® (NFI) is a non-partisan organization committed to improving the emotional well-being and behavioral health of children in America through the promotion of responsible fatherhood. In support of this endeavor, they provide skill-building resources and programs to increase the proportion of children with involved, responsible, and committed fathers.
Unshockingly - per the NFI website - "research shows that when children have involved, responsible, and committed fathers, they express better socio-emotional and academic functioning and grow up to lead happier, healthier lives. Research also demonstrates that father absence is strongly linked to poverty, teen pregnancy, juvenile delinquency, abuse, suicide, substance and alcohol abuse, and a host of other issues."
As any parent can tell you, raising a child is not easy and - especially in today's world - there are countless hurdles that can hinder the chances of a child growing up to be a positive and constructive member of society.
Organizations such as NFI, dads, uncles, big brothers, mentors - and moms - work tirelessly on a daily basis to act as positive role models to save our precious youth from becoming another negative statistic. They deserve our praise and support each and every day, but most especially on Father's Day!
