There are amazing people doing amazing things all around us. Social media platforms have helped bring to light some of the incredible things that have been happening all along, just under the radar of society. One of our favorite examples of this is the special education teacher from Florida who posted a video of how he begins every day in his classroom.
Chris Ulmer's video shows him calling every student up, one by one, to stand in front of him. Then, he compliments them on all the things he sees them doing well in class and tells them about their personality traits that he appreciates.
Before sending them back to their seat, he gives them a high-five.
According to the article, "The Brilliant Way This Special Ed Teacher Starts Class Every Day" by Elisabeth Brentano, "Ulmer says many of his students were previously in an educational atmosphere where they felt defeated. “I consider it my job to reverse this psychological hardwiring and build up their esteem,” he told The Mighty. “Simple reminders of their positive attributes shifts student focus from what they can’t do to what they can do."
Ulmer has seen the kids start to compliment each other in the same way that he intentionally compliments them. He has also noticed improvements in the students' eye-contact and communication with him when he gives them compliments.
