When you think of major holidays in March, the only one that comes to mind may be Saint Patrick's Day on March 17th. If so, then you've been missing the opportunity to celebrate some really incredible people in your own community.
March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day. This year, in particular, is an especially exciting celebration because it marks the 10th anniversary of this annual celebration. This is a day for bringing awareness to Downs, educating people what having a developmental disability really means, and of course celebrating the vital role that people with Downs play in our communities and our lives.
The theme for this year's World Down Syndrome Day is "My Opportunities, My Choices" - Enjoying Full and Equal Rights and the Role of Families. According to the World Down Syndrome Day website,
"Empowering families to promote the equal status of their members in society and development is crucial, so that they can provide support, advocate for opportunities and choices and empower people with Down syndrome to express their own views and make their own decisions, as well as advocate for themselves."
