Some offer access to licensed therapists or psychologists, others may remind those with severe depression to take their medication or drink enough water, and still others offer daily uplifting quotes to help ease stress and anxiety.
However, these apps are certainly not a "one size fits all" remedy, so it is important to analyze what kind of therapy or treatment you're looking for before you run out and purchase a self-help app, expecting guaranteed success.
Some questions to consider are:
- Is it important to me to receive therapy in person?
- Do I prefer being able to control the setting in which my therapy takes place (i.e., from the comfort of my own home)?
- Can I effectively communicate over the phone?
- Is face-to-face contact an essential part of my healing process?
- Do daily reminders and meaningful quotes inspire me or will constant alerts and notifications irritate me, increasing my anxiety levels?
- When addressing my mental health issues, is it necessary for me to "unplug" from all devices or does technology enhance my ability to focus on myself?
- At the end of the day, what do I want to get out of this? And how much (effort, money, time) am I willing to put in?
Once you've asked yourself such questions and consciously self-assessed, you are ready to decide whether or not your phone is something that should be included in (or excluded from) your journey towards a healthier mental state.
