The number of people suffering from depression, mental or emotional health issues normally increases over the Holidays and that can be for a variety of reasons. Fox 59 in Indiana states that the reasons for the increase can be for a variety of reasons such as alcohol and food consumption, lack of sleep, and high expectations for the holiday season. With parties at offices and with friends and families, it can also be a hectic time of year.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, extra stress can be a source of the holiday blues. Traveling long distances can be one example of extra stress, especially if there are delays such as traffic congestion or flights stymied by snow.
NAMI states several sources of holiday blues and they are:
- Less sunlight
- Changes in diet or routine
- The inability to be with friends and family
- Increase in commercialization
The holiday blues are temporary but clinical anxiety and depression is permanent. However, there are ways to avoid or lessen the impact of mental health issues, according to NAMI. They are:
- Sticking to regular routines
- Getting enough sleep
- Getting exercise, even a short walk
- Setting reasonable expectations and goals for holiday activities
- Making a budget for holiday activities like buying presents
- Finding healthy ways to relax
- Using a support system and having someone to call with problems can be beneficial, too.
While the holiday season can present increased demands, with practical tips, and receiving any needed help from a mental health professional, one might be able to have a better than normal experience.
