When you find yourself in a leadership position, the temptation is there to toot your own horn. However, Forbes writer Amy Modglin explains how leadership is really about others, not yourself.
Focus yourself on your team
As a leader, it is your responsibility to help your team be successful. They are working on your projects, and you are working on them so they can grow and develop and be the best workers they can be. Don't be tempted to focus on yourself as leader; the team is really about all the people, not just you.
Be a generous leader
Does this mean you generously hand out pay raises to everyone? No. A generous leader shows genuine appreciation toward his people. He generously recognizes a hard worker for a job well done. A generous leader gives credit where credit is due. Not only does this make your team members feel appreciated, it also motivates them to work even harder.
Get to know your people
Go beyond the application information and find out what makes your teammates click. Gather information about them, and genuinely care about their lives outside the workplace. Also, ask your team members what they dream to do in the future. Knowing someone makes them feel as if they have value. It's not about you, but it is a great way for you to gain respect among your people.
Be proud of another's accomplishments
When someone in your team does well, moves forward to a better job, or achieves an honor, you should feel proud. Under your leadership this person grew and thrived and produced results. Even if the person is now leaving your team, you can be thankful for the honor of working with her.
Give them confidence
You know you're doing something right when your people have the confidence to make big decisions and accomplish risky tasks. You don't rush in and do all the hard stuff yourself. You empower your people to do hard things and then you give them the credit and honor they deserve.
The more you learn about being a leader, the more you realize how much it is about other people. Be the type of leader others look up to with respect.
