Therapy is designed to improve your quality of life by helping you recover from deficits. Some people are born with deficits, while others develop them from illnesses, injuries, surgeries or accidents. Effective therapists work hard with patients to regain, or establish for the first time, skills that are considered crucial to success in life.
Speech therapy focuses on a person's ability to effectively communicate with the people around them. Goals are typically set by a patient and the therapist together so that they are working toward achievable outcomes for their particular situation.
One example from pop culture of speech therapy showing great promise in rehabilitating someone is currently making headlines.
NBA star, Lamar Odom, has played for the Clippers, the Lakers, the Knicks and the Mavericks. He even spent a little time playing basketball in Spain as a member of a European league. He is also known for being married to reality television star Khloe Kardashian.
Just months ago, no one was sure if Odom would make a full recovery after being found unconscious, but now, according to the NBC News article, "Lamar Odom's Speech Improving During Therapy, Family Says" by the Associated Press,
"Lamar Odom's family that his speech is improving as he undergoes therapy in Los Angeles ... He is beginning to gradually flourish both mentally and physically," said a statement from Alvina Alston, publicist for Odom's aunt JaNean Mercer. "His use of speech has increased and he's more cognitively responsive." Alston called Odom's therapy regimen "aggressive," but she did not elaborate."
Hopefully, Odom's recovery will be an example of the power of speech therapy. Since Odom is well-known, his story may cause other people to actively seek therapy when they have seen deficits in their speech for any reason.
