He's Not Weird– He's my Brother— He Has Autism

Autism, Behavioral HealthWhen someone insulted your mother on the playground, teased you about your looks, or called your dog ugly, those were fighting words. Many a black eye or bloody nose resulted.

When first-grader Lex Camilleri heard from a classmate, "You're brother is weird!", she wanted to defend him.

Lex decided to answer the girl, not with a push, a shove, or more harsh words; Lex chose to hit back with the truth. She told the other child, "My brother has autism, he isn't weird."

Her classmate had no idea what autism was, but Lex didn't let it go. She was upset. She realized that she could help people understand better, even grownups, with better information.

With help from her mom, Sophie, Lex penned a heartfelt letter to her entire school, explaining that having a disability doesn't make you weird. "Some people are different, but we should all be treated the same."

Lex's proud mother posted a copy on their Facebook page, and the positive response was overwhelming. Many thousands of likes and shares sent the message around the globe.

While some may want to strike out when they are hurt, Lex responded with action. She is determined to educate others about autism and other disabilities. "Disability Awareness in Schools" is an initiative that young Lex hopes to see in her school, and others in England.

Big brother Frank may not be aware that his little sister went to bat for him, but Lex's loyalty showed that being autistic is no barrier to love. Sometimes it takes the honesty of a child to make people see the truth.
