Career Growth Through Volunteering

Volunteering, Career Advice, Self-ImprovementAre you looking for a way to set yourself apart from other candidates when applying for jobs? Or maybe, you want to make a change in your career, but don't know where to start. It can be overwhelming to think about, but there are simple changes that can help you to gain new experiences, meet new people and build your confidence to go after that job you have always wanted.

One possible solution is to add volunteering to your resume. Through volunteer experiences, you can demonstrate a passion and commitment to something other than your career and these experiences can speak to your character, not just your credentials. It also allows you to try out a new interest without making a long term commitment if you decide it is not the direction you want to go.

Building a New Network

Volunteering is a great way to meet people who share a common interest. It can also be beneficial because it builds a new network of individuals that could help with that next career move. So often we surround ourselves with people who we feel comfortable with, or have the same career goals as us. Reaching out to people who are outside our social and professional circles can create new opportunities and open doors that we may not have previously considered a possibility.

Gaining Experiences and Skills

If your resume is in need of some real life experiences, volunteering is a great way to add that to your career profile. Having these volunteer experiences can lead to gaining a new skill set and becoming a well-rounded candidate for that job you are after. Developing or fine tuning a new skill through volunteering can also give you a new confidence to pursue jobs or careers that you may not have considered in the past.

There is really no downside to volunteering. At the very least, it can help build your resume and decide what direction you want your career to go. Career experts have suggested that adding volunteer experience to your resume can add value as well.
