Behavioral Health: Five Ways to Help Your Child Manage Their Anxiety

Posted by Brian Spence on Jul 24, 2017 8:00:00 AM

Behavioral Health, Fear, Anxiety, Mental HealthIn today's society, behavioral health is a significant concern for children. Children face horrible issues with anxiety and need coping mechanisms to face them.

Below we will discuss five ways to help your child manage their problems with anxiety.

  1. Face your fear: encouraging your child to face his/her fear will help them to see that there is nothing to fear. Also, they will learn that anxiety does not last forever.

  2. Perfection: make sure your child knows that there is no such thing as perfection. Encourage them to do the best they can, but not be so hard on themselves.

  3. Positive vs. Negative: if your child is already focused on the negative because of their anxiety issues, then placing your focus on the positive circumstances will help them. Your child will model what they see; if you focus on the positive, they will too.

  4. Relax: take the time to relax, and just have fun with your child. Just having fun will help them be less anxious, let go and be free.

  5. Stay calm: your child will model their behavior after yours, so if you are showing signs of stress, they will too. If you can manage to stay clam, this will help to calm their anxiety, and help them to stay calm.

Finally, the above referenced ideas are just a few ways to help your child manage their anxiety. Remember, your child models their behavior after you, so if you can manage to stay calm in most situations, then they will also learn to do the same.
