Careers in medical fields require a lot of education. Specialized skills are necessary to interact with patients, and like all educational opportunities, it is easy to find yourself pretty far into a degree or licensing program before you discover if the job you're going to school for is really a career you will enjoy and find satisfying.
An amazing program in Illinois is changing all of that for high school students.
The Whiteside Area Career Center is offering high school students the opportunity to earn medical licenses, while getting hands-on medical experience in clinical rotations.
One student, Kelli Mitchell, a high school senior, earned a CNA through the program and then spent time in an OB unit, where she discovered that obstetrics didn't really suit her. After that, she spent time serving with a local fire department, and according to the SaukValley.com article, "Allied Health Students Explore Various Niches at WACC" by Christopher Heimerman, she rode along to an emergency situation where a person she knew had died.
"She had to help calm the persons’ family members, who wanted to see the deceased – but the coroner had not yet arrived. 'Of course I felt sorry for them, but I didn’t freak out – which is a good thing,” she said during Friday’s class. “I realized the death didn’t faze me. I thought it would before I got there, but I handled it totally fine, and my clinical instructor was very impressed.'"
Now she knows that she responds well under pressure and can handle high-stress situations. Other students who think they might enjoy nursing learn that they can't handle blood or vomit. Even though this may disappoint them, they are learning valuable information, before they even graduate from high school. This early information gives them time to pursue different careers, before investing years of education into a specialty they learn isn't really for them.
