Acing an Occupational Therapist Job Interview

Occupational Therapist, Allied Health, COTAIf you recently completed your degree in occupational therapy, you are likely eager to start working. Before you can get your perfect job, though, you will likely need to go through the interview process, possibly several times. While not every interviewer is going to ask the exact same questions, there are several types of questions you should be prepared to answer.

These questions, which came from people who interview potential occupational therapists, fall into four categories.

  1. Demonstrating Unique Abilities. Be ready to deal with questions that demonstrate your unique abilities. These may include questions about why you want to work at that specific place as well as what makes you the right person for the job. Ideally, you want to answer these questions in a way that demonstrates that you will fit well with the company.

  2. Showing What You Value. These questions may overlap with those that demonstrate your unique abilities. These may include questions about how you handled a situation where you saw a patient mistreated or how you would handle a situation like that. It may also include questions about how you might handle the situation differently now than you did at the time.

  3. Showing Who You Are Outside of the Workplace. While these may be your stereotypical, strengths and weaknesses questions, it may also be something along the lines of asking about your hobbies or asking how your friends would describe you.

  4. Showing You've Done Your Research. These questions may also fall into other categories, but the key place where you get to demonstrate that you have done your research are the questions you ask at the end. Even before you go into the interview, you should be ready to ask questions about the company or the position. You can also ask for greater clarity on anything that was discussed during the interview. Make sure your questions are not something easily answered on the Internet or through simple research. These questions should demonstrate an interest in the company and reinforce that you would be a good fit.
