As people get older, if they have not already completed a college education, sometimes they make excuses about why it is too late. Maybe they begin to feel that it is not worth their time or like they like they missed their chance to get a degree. That was not the case for 88-year-old Horace Sheffield, a Georgia man who recently graduated from Shorter University with a Bachelor of Science in Christian Studies. Sheffield started college in 1960 but dropped out in 1965 just a few credits short of graduating.
Fast forward nearly 50 years, and Sheffield was retired and living on a fixed income. He didn't think he would be able to complete his unfinished degree.
Then Sheffield read an article in a magazine that talked about senior citizens going to college for free, and that started him back on his educational journey.
Even though Sheffield completed his degree online, it was not a completely solitary process. Amanda Brannock, who goes to church with Sheffield acted as the man’s tutor and typist. Sheffield would write out things long-hand, and Brannock would type it out for him. She also walked across the stage with him, making sure he made it across the stage safely.
Despite her time helping Sheffield with his own schoolwork, Brannock herself has not yet completed a college degree. She said she was a bit misguided when she first attempted to get her degree, and she ran out of financial aid. Sheffield has said he will walk across the stage with his tutor when she graduates, perhaps providing Brannock with the perfect incentive to continue her own schooling.
