5 Key Productivity Tips to Increase Work-Life Balance

Posted by Brian Spence on Jan 26, 2015 8:00:00 AM

Work-Life Balance, ProductivityIt's a challenge that nearly every working professional faces at some point: finding that delicate work life balance. When work gets busy, it's easy to allow your job to completely consume every aspect of your life, often to the detriment of family, friends, and other activities that are important to you. Finding a balance seems like an insurmountable task, but it's essential to both your productivity at work and your mental health.

Read on to discover tips for getting your life back when you're drowning at work:

  1. Create a routine. Set a routine for yourself that helps you begin your day on a productive, positive note. Consider waking up a bit earlier than normal to get some work done before you head into the office. Make time for yourself to wind down in the evening before going to bed. Additionally, try to go to bed around the same time each night; this helps your body to know what to expect each evening so that you can get more restorative sleep.

  2. Find time for exercise. It's easy to move exercise way down your list of priorities when work gets busy. However, exercising is crucial to your mental health and overall sense of well-being. Exercising pumps endorphins throughout your body, which help elevate your mood and reduce stress. So, even if it's just for twenty minutes, find time to get moving every day.

  3. Unplug yourself. In today's technology driven society, we're rarely unplugged. We're constantly answering phone calls, texting, responding to emails, and searching the internet on our smart phones or tablets. The result is that we're overstimulated and on our work days never really end. Set aside some unplugged time each day-- and then follow through. That means turning off your smart phone, putting the tablet away, and even shutting off the TV. Be present in the moment with the people you love.

  4. Rid yourself of activities and people who waste your time. How many times a day do you check your Facebook page or mindlessly browse the internet? How often do you get side-tracked by that co-worker who spends a half hour telling you all about her weekend plans? It's okay to take mental breaks, but be aware of ways that you are unintentionally wasting productive time. Then eliminate those distractions from your day.

  5. Find time for yourself. It's easy to put yourself last when you're juggling several different projects. However, it's important to find some quiet time for yourself each day. During this time, you can read, meditate, or just sit quietly and reflect. This allows you to relax and unwind.
